Size: 1 lb Bag

Directly sourced from organic farms near Bengaluru in India, our powder comes from locally grown tomatoes that are sun-dried to perfection. Made from the "naati" variety, which translates to "local," these little gems are cultivated along with many other fruits and vegetables and then sold to a Farmer Producers Organization (FPO) daily. To make our powder, the tomatoes are sun dried from March through May when the weather is low in humidity and hot (90°F or more). With all the bright, complex acidity of tomatoes in a concentrated form, you can incorporate this powder into spice rubs or sprinkle it over roasted veggies, chicken and fish.

Tip: When you only need a small amount of tomato paste, combine equal parts tomato powder and hot water.

Origin

Karnataka, India

For more than 15 years, Mr. Mahendran has been practicing organic farming in the Atibele village near Bengaluru in Karnataka, India. Mahendran is a key player in helping other small growers transition from conventional to organic farming methods. The FPO that he belongs to procures and sells up to 2,200 pounds of fresh produce on a daily basis in nearby cities, ensuring regular procurement from the farmers and helping them sell their produce at a fair price. Attributed to the land's altitude, topography, and distance from the sea, Karnataka's dynamic weather conditions allow crops to thrive. The climate ranges from arid to semi-arid to humid tropical, with two annual monsoons bringing rainfall.

Tips for Success

  • Tomato powder can be used in any tomato recipes. Use it to make a quick tomato sauce. Mix tomato powder with water or tomato juice to create a thick paste. Add your desired seasonings and simmer until the sauce thickens.
  • It can be used as a marinade for meats, poultry and fish as well as seasoning for vegetables, and soups.
  • Tomato powder is more concentrated than fresh tomatoes, so a little goes a long way. Start with a small amount and add more as needed to achieve your desired flavor.

FAQ

How old are these spices?

We purchase what we need every year right after the spices are harvested. These spices are as fresh as you can get. They are not sitting in a warehouse for multiple years. The oldest spices we carry will be one year old compared to the commodity market which warehouses spices for 10+ years before selling them to you.

Are these spices certified organic?

Unfortunately we do not have any certifications at this time but most of our spices are organically grown and all of them are non gmo. Each ingredient can be traced back to its origin. Email support@spicetribe.com for any questions.

Do you have recipes to go with these blends?

Yes! We have an ever expanding recipe library of chef tested recipes. Please shoot us an email if there are any recipes you would like to see at support@spicetribe.com.
